INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. Advocacy versus advisement was the main topic of conversation with the Incline Village/Crystal Bay Citizen Advisory Board Wednesday night.
The board met before its regularly scheduled meeting for two hours to discuss civic engagement and how to involve more people at its monthly meetings.
What board members mulled was the idea of moving the boards role from one of advising, to advocating for the Incline Village/Crystal Bay communities to the Washoe County Board of Commissioners.
We have influence, said board member Patrick McBurnett. People know if they come to the CAB we can be a pretty powerful force.
Washoe County Commissioner John Breternitz said the board was a great source of information for him.
Its the closest to the ground of any organization, he said.
Marlene Rebori, a University of Nevada, Reno, professor with a specialty in civic engagement, led the discussion.
Throughout the discussion, board members began to focus on the idea of picking topics of discussion on which the board could focus, discuss with the community and then act as an advocate.
There is no shortage of interesting topics in this community, said alternate board member Gerry Eick. There is a shortage of action to turn out results.
Many of the other board members agreed and said that the Incline Village/Crystal Bay community could become a great resource for the county.
We have more experts per square foot than any other community, said board chair Gene Brockman.
In the end the board did not take any formal action, but decided to reach out to the community to find topics of interest.
Im wondering if as a board we can become more proactive and recognize issues in the community and try to tackle them, said board member Rick Jones.
