INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. If you love hiking, biking or even riding horses in Tahoe, I am sure you have been on the Tahoe Rim Trail.
Saturday there is an excellent opportunity to show support for a grassroots organization that maintains and enhances the 165 miles of trail around the lake, The Tahoe Rim Trail Association.
If you are not familiar with the Tahoe Rim Trail, it is used for hiking but also used by equestrians as well as mountain bikers. The trail encompasses the ridge tops of the Lake Tahoe Basin, crossing six counties, and two states and overlaps with approximately fifty miles of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. The trail exists because of volunteers and continues to be maintained by volunteers.
But that is not all TRTA does. It also trains volunteers, offers guided hikes including its annual Through Hike.
Saturday, National Trails Day will be the groundbreaking ceremony for the Daggett Summit Trails System at the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park in Stateline, Nev. These 13 miles of trail have been in the planning stage for more than 15 years and will complete the last section of the trail that is still on paved roadway.
The day will begin with a 9 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony, followed by a volunteer trail construction workday that includes a free lunch and also an afternoon reception at Explore Tahoe in Stateline, Nev. Registration is required and you can take care of that by going to www.tahoerimtrail.org or calling Ben Storrud at (775) 298-0239.
Not a bad way to spend your Saturday, if you ask me.
