LAKE TAHOE — (This story was updated at 2 p.m. Thursday) The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's Board of Control unanimously approved a proposal this week to reduce the maximum number of games for most sports effective the 2009-2010 school year.
NIAA posted the announcement on its website after Day 1 of its two-day spring meeting, which concluded Wednesday at Reno Aces Ballpark.
The cost-cutting proposal, initiated by NIAA Executive Director Eddie Bonine and based on recommendations from the state's superintendents, was approved by a 7-0 vote.
“For Incline, it's not going to affect us much, because we're just one school,” said Dan Schreiber, athletic director and head boys basketball coach at Incline High School. “But if you look at the 110 schools in the state, you take away a couple games from each, then that's hundreds of thousands of dollars saved.”
The most significant change, Schreiber said, involves rules on games/matches versus tournaments. Past NIAA rules allowed sports like basketball and soccer to play 20 games and enter two tournaments per season.
Furthermore, schools could “cash in” a tournament in return for three non-league games, Schreiber said. The new model is 18 games and two tournaments, and the option to exchange a tournament for games no longer exists.
Truckee High School Athletic Director Bob Shaffer could not be reached for comment.
Joanne Mathis, North Tahoe High School's athletic director this past school year, said she resigned after the spring season. North Tahoe principal Bill Frey, also the school's athletic administrator, could not be reached for comment.

Realignment shelved until 2010-2011
Realignment of the state's four-class system — another proposed cost-cutting measure — was not voted on by the board. The NIAA said the realignment proposal, which would condense the four classes into three in all sports but football, “would continue to be studied over the course of the next school year and will be a focal point of the NIAA's fall athletic administrator meetings.”
The fall meeting is scheduled for Aug. 7-9 in Mesquite.
Truckee, North Tahoe and Incline high schools, as well as South Tahoe and Whittell, were reclassified for different leagues in 2009-'10 under the NIAA's proposed three-class realignment released last month.
Under the proposed three-class realignment, Truckee and the other current Northern 3A schools would join the 13-member Division II along with South Tahoe, Hug, Wooster, Elko, Fallon and Rite of Passage.
If the reclassification proposal is eventually approved, current Northern 2A schools North Tahoe, Incline and Whittell could move to the 16-member Division III Western Region. The region would combine 10 current Class 1A members with six 2A members.
NIAA Assistant Commissioner Donnie Nelson conceded last month that the proposed realignment will not save travel time and costs for all schools.
