New Washoe County schools Superintendent Heath Morrison
INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — New Washoe County schools Superintendent Heath Morrison agreed to a four-year contract with the school district Tuesday night, worth $238,000 annually.
Morrison, recently hired to replace Paul Dugan, who is set to retire Aug. 1, will earn more than his predecessor, who in the last year of his contract earned $206,000.
“We've been very fortunate in Washoe County with having Dugan over the last five years,” said Board President Barbara Clark. “I think the district has grown a great deal, from something like 80th in size nationally to 50th, and during those five years time have changed in the education field and what superintendents are being paid.”
Morrison's contract includes provisions such as travel expenses and a school district-supplied vehicle as well.
The contract is set to expire on May 31, 2013, and Clark said the board will review Morrison's performance each year.
“We have been hearing from staff and the community and everybody is excited for Dr. Morrison to start,” Clark said. “We'll miss Paul, he's done a fantastic job over the past five years, and now we're stepping into a new relationship with a new superintendent and we're eager to start that.”
Clark said Morrison is expected in Washoe County from July 7-21 to meet key leaders in the district's administration and staff, and is expected to start Aug. 1 in place of Dugan.
Morrison, 42, accepted the position earlier this month after serving as a Community Superintendent in Montgomery County, Md., where he oversaw 34 schools and about 23,000 students. Prior to that he served as a teacher, principal and district administrator at a variety of levels. Morrison holds a Bachelor's of Arts from the College of William and Mary and a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Leadership from the University of Maryland.
He is married with two children.
