INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — On Wednesday, the Incline Village Library changed its schedule so it opens later and closes earlier to save 13 hours of operating time a week.
And beginning Wednesday, Incline Village resident Diane Jones also adjusted her schedule.
“I'll be in here earlier,” Jones said. “I'm more of an afternoon person.”
The library's reduced hours are just one of the ways Incline Village and Crystal Bay will feel the effects of Washoe County's tighter budget.
“There isn't anything that isn't going to suffer one way or another in terms of services,” said Washoe County Commissioner John Breternitz. “Everything the county provides in terms of services to the people who live here is going to be reduced or cut back to some extent or another.”
The county-wide cutbacks are part of budget cuts approved in May. The Washoe County Board of Commissioners approved a $593 million operating budget for the Fiscal Year 2009-2010, $67.7 million less than fiscal year 2008-2009.
To attain the smaller budget, the county is set to have about 300 fewer employees in the next fiscal year.
This is the result of 92 people being laid off, 144 people taking early retirement, 65 positions left vacant and five other positions open from other measures.
Some main areas that will be affected in Incline Village include the Incline Village Library, Washoe County Sheriff's Office and Incline Village Clerk's Office
This reduction of 38 positions county-wide for the sheriff's office will not affect service in Incline Village, said Washoe County Sheriff's Office South Division Commander, Capt. Wayne Yarbrough.
“There will be no decrease whatsoever for patrol,” he said, adding that the county-wide patrol staff of 83 deputies will be filled.
At the library, hours have already decreased from 43 to 30 hours a week. The library will be open from noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
The satellite office of the Washoe County Clerk in Incline Village closed July 1. People in need of fictitious name statements, oaths of notary public, property tax payment options and voter registration can visit the clerk's website at washoecounty.us/clerks.
Marriage licenses will now be issued at the Incline Village General Improvement District's Administration Building at 893 Southwood Blvd.
For information on how to apply for a marriage license, contact IVGID's main office at (775) 832-1100.
The best way for residents to deal with the closings and shortened hours is to offer their time and skills, Breternitz said.
“I think right now is probably as trying of a time as we've faced since I've been in Northern Nevada and working together is the only way we're going to get through this,” he said. “Though volunteering and people understanding that we are doing everything we can as a community to get through this and understanding that patience is an important part of the equation.”
