LAKE TAHOE — Erik Skaden of Folsom, Calif., defended his title in the Tahoe Rim Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run this past weekend, crossing the Spooner Lake finish line in the wee hours of Sunday morning with a time of 20 hours, 27 minutes, 32 seconds.
The win also earned Skaden, 37, the USA Track and Field 100-Mile Trail National Championship, as well as the Road Runners Club of America 100-Mile National Ultra Championship. Last year he shared those titles — as well as the $1,000 prize purse — with Mike Wolfe of Missoula, Mont., after the two agreed to finish at the same time in just over 18 hours, 59 minutes.
In the women's 100-mile field, Bree Lambert of San Jose won her first-ever title in the Tahoe Rim Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run. She led all female runners, including those in the 50K and 50-mile races, from the starting gun and finished in 23 hours, 42 minutes, 32 seconds.

50K Endurance Run
About a half-day before the top 100-miler racers finished, Truckee's Peter Fain, 37, smoked the field in the 50-kilometer race, winning his third consecutive title in 4 hours, 39 minutes, 4 seconds. He won in 2008 with a time of 4:48:30, and set a new course record in 2007 with a mark of 4:33:29.“I was aiming for the course record,” Fain said, “but they moved one of the aid stations, and that added about a mile and a half to the 50K.”
Fain said he felt strong the entire race, in large part because he avoided the hottest part of the day with his 10:45 a.m. finish.
Tim Twietmeyer of Auburn, Calif., took second behind Fain with a time of 5:22:14, and Julie Young captured the top spot among women and finished third overall in 5:27:28.
50M Endurance Run
Mark Gilligan, 38, of Oakland won the 50-miler by a large margin in 8 hours, 21 minutes, 32 seconds, while Shan Riggs took second in 9:33:51 and Lee McKinley third in 9:37:16. Wendi Parker-Dial, 39, of Franklin, Tenn., outdistanced the women's 50-mile field, taking the top spot in 9:46:27, and Truckee's Gretchen Brugman finished on her heels with a personal-best time of 9:57:04. Not bad considering her goal was to finish under 11 hours, 5 minutes.
“I felt like I paced myself pretty well,” said Brugman, who competed for the fourth time in one of the three distances. “I think having a lot of experience on the course — finally — paid off.”
High attrition rate
About 50 percent of the field dropped out, many in the heat of the day when temperatures flirted with triple-digits. According to the results, 64 of the 112 registered 100-mile competitors did not finish. In the 50-miler, 96 of the 143 starters finished, according to the results, while 165 of the 189 in the 50-kilometer race reached the finish.
