Beauty can be found everywhere in the Incline Village/Crystal Bay area. It seems that everyone has a different idea of what is the most beautiful scene too. Is it the mountains, the forests, the wildlife, a sunrise or sunset or just the lake?
There really is so much beauty surrounding our village that it should not be a surprise to anyone that so many artists live here. They are everywhere. In studios in shopping areas, down little lanes in neighborhoods and hidden away in the nooks and crannies of our village.
Many are so well-hidden that they can be located only on websites or by spotting something they have created in a local gallery or shop. Sometimes you can see an artist at work in one of the natural studios. If you drive along Highway 28 some evenings around sunset it is not unusual to see Chris Talbot setting up his tripod and preparing to capture the beauty with his camera.
On most summer weekends little signs pop up all around announcing a gallery opening, artist studio opening or just inviting everyone going by to stop and see the local art. It is almost like a secret art colony exists in Incline Village, and for that matter, all around the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Tucked away in one of the little neighborhoods is the studio of award winning sculptor, June Towill Brown. The only way to find the studio and see inside is by special appointment.
“My work can be viewed in the Pacific Crest Gallery located in Heavenly Village or the Carmel Gallery in Truckee,” she said.
Local photographer Bob Mimiaga's studio is tucked away in one of those nooks and crannies; however, it is open each year during the North Tahoe Art ARTour. Mimiaga, along with several other local artists included in the tour, also have work that can be viewed at the North Tahoe Arts gallery in Tahoe City, as well as in other local galleries.
“About seven years ago I got into the ARTour,” Mimiaga said. “I also have some pieces on display at Made in Tahoe in the Tahoe Biltmore.”
Local galleries and studios that are open daily include: Artists at Tahoe in the Village Center, Art Attack in the Christmas Tree Village, Made in Tahoe Gallery in the Tahoe Biltmore, Artistic Concept's gallery in the US Bank building and Jan Foss' Watercolors in the Country Club Center — even The Potlatch in Raley's Center sells local art.
Each one offers an opportunity to see some of the incredible art talent located in the area. This includes more than photography or paintings, it includes pottery, jewelry, wood carvings and tapestries.
But don't stop there. Go ahead and explore other galleries around the lake too and don't forget about websites. You will quickly learn that it is an endless task identifying all of the local artists. But try anyway because each one is worth exploring and learning about and it is a great way to enjoy the beauty of Tahoe.
