North Tahoe fire crews return from NorCal blazes

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — When lightning sparked blazes in Lassen National Forest on Aug. 1, three Incline Village-based fire crews responded.

The Incline, Rifle Peak and Slide Mountain hand crews deployed to McArthur, Calif., about 60 miles northeast of Redding. Crews were put up in McArthur while responding to the fires in the nearby forest.

All three returned Sunday from fighting the Hat Creek and Dodge fire complexes in the LNF.

Together, the complexes burnt about 13,000 acres of forest.

Isaac Powning, supervisor of the Rifle Peak hand crew, said the fire exhibited extreme behavior in vegetation similar to that found in Tahoe.

“Our first couple of days the winds were pushing the fire,” Powning said. “It was hot, dry and windy. The last few days we were there we got the cold front (late last week) but the fire behavior was still way out of the norm, it was exhibiting extreme fire behavior.”

He said the winds weren't pushing the fires upslope in the hilly forest as much as they fanned the flames across the terrain. The vegetation in LNF is similar to Tahoe, Powning said, with manzanita and pine trees.

Powning said the Rifle Peak crew burnt out a three mile area of forest to slow the advance of the fire; the Slide crew did the same and the Incline hand crew spent time digging fire lines.

The Hat Creek Complex, as of Tuesday, was 90 percent contained, the Dodge Complex at 95 percent and many of the fires inside the complex were 100 percent contained.

Most of the out-of-area resources called to the blaze have been sent to their home districts.

Chipping requests

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District handcrews provide curbside chipping services and defensible space evaluations throughout the end of each fire season.

So far this year, the NLTFPD recieved 128 requests for chipping, and completed 126. Crews have so far completed 218 requests for defensible space evaluations out of the 240 recieved.

To request these services, contact the defensible space/chipping request phone line at (775) 831-0351, ext. 8118.
