INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Incline High School varsity girls golf team enjoyed a 56-stroke victory Thursday at Eagle Valley Golf Course, with senior Katelyn Wright again leading the way.
Wright's 3-under 75 led all golfers, besting North Tahoe's Haley Packard (86) by 11 strokes. Incline's Gwen Paul (89) and Grace Dolan (95) finished third and fourth overall, with Pershing County High School's Kaleen Sherman (106) rounding out the top five for teams. Mineral County High School's Tori Nepper, golfing by herself, posted a 100.
Despite Wright's third-consecutive individual first-place finish this season, she said there is room for improvement.
“Katelyn said she stills needs to spend more time on her short game to improve and lower her scores,” said coach Joe Humasti. “Katelyn realizes to score low she needs to convert her good shots into birdies. It all goes back to 70 person of the game of golf is the short game.”
Michaela Tonking's 117 rounded out the scoring for Incline, and the team posted a 376 overall. North Tahoe posted a 423, thanks to strong performances from Kristen Larson (107), Charlotte Henn (114) and Kelsea Dunn (116). Lovelock finished with a 495.
“Gwen Paul continues to improve also with sophomore Grace Dolan,” Humasti said. “Grace has limited tournament experience and her scores are continuing to improve.”
Humasti also held praise for the Lakers' improving scores.
“North Tahoe continues to improve. Like I said before there are no favorites in a golf match as anything can happen,” Humasti said. “If we fall back, North Tahoe and a few other teams can catch us, as there are really no favorites in golf match.”
Next week, the teams compete in a 2:30 match at the Championship Golf Course in Incline.
