WINNEMUCCA, Nev. — The Nevada Press Association on Saturday honored the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza with 27 awards in its Better Newspaper Contest, including recognizing News Editor Annie Flanzraich as Outstanding Journalist of the Year.
Overall, the Bonanza won nine first place awards at the annual convention, in which newspapers serving readers in Nevada are awarded top honors in the state for reporting, photography, graphic design, editorial writing, advertising and general excellence. The awards were for content created March 2008 through March 2009. The Bonanza won its awards in NPA's Class III division — medium-size non-daily publications.
Beside being named one of the state's top two journalists — hers for weekly newspapers — Flanzraich also was recognized with the Class III Journalist of Merit award, which goes to a journalist with fewer than five years of experience.
“Extremely versatile. Is able to engage the community in a variety of ways. Listens to the readers and can tackle tough issues,” judges said about Flanzraich's Outstanding Journalist nod, shared with Molly Ball of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Judges also commented on Flanzraich's Journalist of Merit award: “Is there anything this reporter doesn't do? Great news and feature writing. Wonderfully thorough series work. Very easy to read. Well done.”
Flanzraich also earned first-place nods for Best Feature Story, for her April 16, 2008, story “The Algae Effect”; and for Best Explanatory Journalism, for her four-part series “One mussel, one world of trouble,” which ran May and June 2008 and introduced the local community to the invasive mussel and the potential impact one could have if introduced into Lake Tahoe.
The Bonanza won two first place awards for its website — www.tahoebonanza.com — in the Best Web Site and Best Web Site for Community Participation categories, as well as a first-place award in Community Participation, for coordinating a series of election-related forums and get-togethers during summer and fall 2008.
Former photographer Jen Schmidt earned four first-place awards — one for Best Entertainment Writing for her May 11 coverage of the 40th anniversary of Incline High School — and three top visual awards for Best General News Photo, Best Feature Photo and Best Illustrated Photo.
“We're staying humble, as the saying goes something like, ‘No matter how good we think we are, we are only as good as the last edition we put out on the streets,'” said Bonanza Executive Editor Ryan Slabaugh. “While we certainly appreciate the recognition, we would transfer any credit to our community of advertisers, readers, writers and contributors for guiding us through the challenges that were 2009, and supporting us so we could provide this level of award-winning journalism. Our communities of Incline Village and Crystal Bay deserve all of the credit for the Bonanza's historic achievements this year.”
