INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Incline High School girls golf team — led by senior Katie Wright's even-par 72 — leads comfortably after day one of the Nevada 2A golf tournament at Genoa Lakes Golf Course.
The Highlanders posted a team score of 381 in Monday's round at the resort's Lakes Course, besting Battle Mountain High School, which sits at second place with a 463, putting the Highlanders in position for their first team title since 2002.
Wright holds a 13-stroke lead, putting her in line for her fourth-straight individual title, a feat accomplished only once in the history of the state.
"It wasn't what I wanted; I didn't feel like I played super well. I missed a lot of putts," said Wright in a Monday evening phone interview. "But still, I can't complain — it's a 72."
IHS senior Gwen Paul shot a 91 for Incline, followed by Grace Dolan's 106 and Michaela Tonking's 112, rounding out the four-member team score for Incline. Kassidy Garland (141) and Natasha Cooper (149) also competed for Incline.
Day two of the tournament, originally scheduled to tee off at 11 a.m. Tuesday, begins at 8 a.m. at the Lakes Course, due to Tuesday's impending rain storm.
"We've just got to go out and play and have fun," said Wright about Tuesday's potential state-title winning round.
Julie Dunn, golfing for Bishop-Gorman from 1992-1995, is the only Nevada golfer to go four-for-four in individual state golf titles.
The IHS girls golf program has enjoyed great success the past decade, as the girls have been state runners-up as a team in 1999, 2003, 2004 and 2008. It also was a three time state champion from 2000-2002.
