As the leaves fall from the trees and the North Lake Tahoe area wakes up to an occasional dusting of snow, we can look back on the year and think of all that has passed. For the Tahoe Children's Foundation this often means how many babies were born or how many new families in the area have found the support TCF has to offer — definitely reasons to celebrate! And that's exactly what they did at their annual Harvest Party on Oct. 21.
The Harvest Party has become a wonderful gathering for community members of all ages to dress up in their Halloween attire to share good food and good conversation. It is a celebration of the organization dedicated to parent education and the development of the area's infants and toddlers.
This year's event kicked off TCF's end-of-year charitable giving campaign. Despite countless hours of fundraising, TCF is experiencing the staggering blow of being well under the needed funds to keep their doors open for another year.
Considering that in the past 12 years TCF has served more than 1,500 families, the overall operating budget has remained fairly modest. Membership fees account for only one-fourth of TCF's operating budget of $89,000. The remaining dollars are generated through fund raising (including Golf Fore Education), grants and private donations.
At the Harvest Party, TCF Board President Maggie Browder and Program Director Laurean Meyer were thrilled to receive the first drop in the bucket toward narrowing the gap in the year's budget deficit. A check for $1,500 from St. Patrick's Episcopal Church was presented to TCF by vestry member Emy Gurowitz and the Rev. Jim Beebe. The money came from a specific outreach fund set up through the church to aid in the education of the community's littlest members. Through the extreme generosity of St. Patrick's parishioners, TCF is a small step closer toward reaching their goal of $30,000 by the end of the 2009 calendar year.
This spirit of giving is spreading even to the children of Incline Village. Within a couple of days of the Harvest Party, Athena Sapourn (3 years-old and a recent graduate of TCF) came to the building, handed over a jar to Director Laurean Meyer and announced, “This is for you ... for TCF.”
Meyer replied, “What is it?”
Sapourn responded, “It's a donation.”
The donation consisted of over $80 in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters that she had saved throughout the entire year to give to the program that she adores.
Last year the North Lake Tahoe community answered the challenge of a handful of TCF families who offered up as much as $5,000 of their own money as matching funds. When all was said and done over $15,000 was raised. This year TCF hopes to find similar contributors with hearts the size of little Athena Sapourn's.
