INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Detectives are investigating whether an elderly woman played a role in the fatal stabbing of her husband, who was found dead at the couple's Incline Village home in October.
Mary Baymiller, 72, chose not to speak to investigators when she was released last week from Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where she was recovering from injuries suffered in the same stabbing incident, said Washoe County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Greg Herrera.
Upon exiting the hospital, Herrera said, Mary Baymiller retained the services of Reno-based attorney Tom Vilario.
Herrera said a homicide investigation was launched shortly thereafter; Vilario offered a short statement Tuesday.
“The investigation continues, and to the extent we can cooperate, we have,” Vilario said.
According to a sheriff's office report, at about 8 p.m. on Oct. 5, deputies found Baymiller, along with husband Charles Baymiller, 73, at their home on the 1000 block of Lakeshore Drive. Charles Baymiller had apparently been stabbed to death, and Mary Baymiller was alive, suffering from multiple stab wounds.
She was transported via CareFlight helicopter to Renown for treatment of serious injuries, and authorities had been waiting for her condition to improve so they could question her about the circumstances of the incident, the result of an apparent altercation between the couple.
Investigators said Charles Baymiller's wounds appeared defensive, according to the report.
The report said members hadn't heard from the Baymillers in an “inordinate period of time” and grew worried over the lack of communication, prompting them to contact deputies.
Herrera said he couldn't speculate on when or if charges would be turned into the Washoe County District Attorney's Office.
