INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Citing the economic hardships faced by the local fire district, Chief Mike Brown requested to forgo a raise when his performance review took place last month.

Brown earned high marks from the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District Board of Directors at his October review, and board chairman Dale Smith said the chief continues to be a leader throughout the basin and region.

“I think he's recognizing the economic reality the district is facing and is leading by example, and those are the best leaders,” Smith said.

Smith pointed to the district's commitment to fuels reduction, prevention and emergency medical services.

“The general consensus from the board was that we're very pleased with his performance,” Smith said. “One thing I brought up is our district is on the forefront of keeping up with what's necessary to be a full service district in this economic environment ... a lot of districts in the region look to us and copy what we've got.”

Brown said his goal in the next year is to continue a high level of service, despite the fact NLTFPD is uncertain about the revenues it will receive from state taxes.

“We want to let people know we're still committed to maintaining our efficiency we've had in the past in delivering services while coordinating those efforts with our financial services,” Brown said.

Smith said the district has its work cut out for it in the upcoming year.

“There's all kinds of challenges facing us, a more competitive environment for fuels reduction funding, there's obviously the economic crunch and uncertainty in terms of what our revenues will be from the state.”

Traditionally a raise follows a positive performance review. However, none of the district's administrators will receive raises this year, Smith said, to slash expenses, meaning Brown maintains his 2009 compensation package of $156,000 annually.

In 2007 he received $124,000 and in 2008, $144,000.
