INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Highlanders will have to bring their A-game to the Northern 2A Regional Tournament in Zephyr Cove on Friday to keep their state title aspirations alive.
Incline, a fourth seed, drew a first-round match at 1 p.m. against six-time defending state champ and tournament host Whittell to kick off the regional competition, which sends the top two of four teams to the state championship. The regional final starts at 4 p.m.
The Warriors swept through the regular season, posting a 10-0 record in league and 20-8 overall, including a pair of wins in three games against the Highlanders. Incline (4-6 league, 4-10 overall) played Whittell tough in Game 2 of their latest meeting on Oct. 27, however, only to come up just short, 28-30.
“My team played awesome and almost took the second game,” Incline head coach Tacy Kelly said after the match. “The girls came together and performed their best match of the season. Whittell is the toughest team to beat in our league, and we have one more shot at them.”
In the other first-round match Friday, third-seeded Battle Mountain and second-seeded Pershing County (Lovelock) face off at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. Senior citizens 62 and older will be admitted for free, as will children 8 and under.

Incline JVs wrap up successful season
The Highlanders' junior varsity squad captured the Northern 2A title with a home win against Pershing County last Friday.Incline, which competed with just six girls after sophomore middle blocker Charlene Swick was called up to varsity early in the season, posted a 9-1 league record and 12-1 overall.
Playing at such a high level without the luxury of substitutions was enough to make head coach Noelle Raihall proud.
“They all have such a strong desire for the game, and they all gave 100 percent effort every match,” Raihall said of her players. “(Incline athletic director) Dan Schreiber asked me to pick an MVP, and I asked, ‘Can I pick six?'”
