Incline cross country: Drago wins Northern 2A title; teams prep for state

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Incline junior Briana Drago raced to a first-place finish in the Northern 2A Region Cross Country Championships last Thursday to earn the North's No. 1 seed entering state.

While Drago set the pace in 21 minutes, 4 seconds on the Carlin, Nev., course — a new record — teammates Melanie Swick and Chloe Dodge also recorded top-10 finishes to help lead the Incline girls to first place as a team with a low score of 54.

The Sage Ridge girls were second, with a score of 78, followed by North Tahoe (99) in third and Virginia City (106) earning the fourth and final state berth.

On the boys' side of the competition, Incline senior Mike Sunseri finished runner-up to Sierra Lutheran's Wade Meddles, posting a time of 17:37 to Meddles' 16:26 — a course record.

Senior Sterling Vinson also posted a top-10 finish for Incline, crossing the line in seventh to help lead the Highlander boys to second place as a team.

Sierra Lutheran's boys took first with a low score of 43. After Incline (61), Sage Ridge (67) and North Tahoe captured the final two playoff spots.

Individually in the girls' race, Swick finished fourth in 22 minutes, 18 seconds. Dodge placed 10th in 23:07, and was trailed by teammates Katie Cochran (12th, 23:28), Ashley Vomund (27th, 25:32), Amy Lindsey (32nd, 26:04) and Kelsey Tokunaga (37th, 27:35). There were 55 runners in the race.

Vinson finished in 18 minutes, 45 seconds for his seventh place. Incline sophomore Eric Baron placed 15th in 19:39, while fellow Highlanders Levi Dodge took 17th in 19:40, Spencer Wilson 20th in 20:01, Daniel Baron 30th in 20:34 and Mitch Comstock 43rd in 22:53. There were 63 boys in the race.

State

The Class 2A, 3A and 4A Nevada State High School Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7 at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. Check the NIAA website, at www.niaa.com, for starting times.
