INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — From Highlander to Cornhusker.
That's the route Katelyn Wright will take once her phenomenal high school career concludes next June. The Incline High School senior announced Wednesday her commitment to the University of Nebraska.
Katie's mother, Shelly Wright, played at Nebraska during her college days, alongside then-player and current coach Robin Krapfl, who has led the varsity Cornhuskers the past 23 seasons.
“That was one of the reasons,” said Wright, regarding her choice to play in Lincoln, Neb. “But it's a lot of things that came together. I like the team, the coach is amazing, the facilities are amazing. It's a great fit.”
A great fit indeed — the Cornhuskers have made three NCAA championship appearances this decade, in 2000, 2003 and 2006. If anyone is familiar with championship experience, it's Wright; in October she became just the second high school student in the history of Nevada to win four straight individual state titles.
"I'm thrilled that we were able to talk Katie into coming to Nebraska," Krapfl said. "I'm very impressed with mer sense of maturity, hoe she's able to see the big picture."
Academically, Nebraska also appears to be the right fit, said Wright, who will major in advertising at the Big 12 Conference school. While playing pro golf with the LPGA is a goal of hers, so too is graduating with a degree.
“It's always been a dream of mine to play pro golf, but I don't want to be one of those (athletes) who goes to school for two years then goes on tour,” she said. “I want to finish all four years, and (Nebraska) gives me the best opportunity to achieve that.”
Wright will sign her official letter of intent at a noon ceremony today (Thursday, Nov. 12) at the high school. The public is encouraged to attend.
