South Tahoe high school employee arrested on drugs, alcohol charge

Man accused of giving 16-year-old marijuana, beer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — El Dorado Sheriff deputies arrested a 63-year-old employee at South Lake Tahoe High School last week after pulling him over and finding that he had allegedly smoked marijuana with a 16-year-old female who was sitting in the passenger seat.

Larry Brown, 63, was arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor by giving her beer and marijuana, according to the El Dorado Sheriff's Office. He has been released on bond, according to the South Lake Tahoe jail.

When questioned by the deputy who smelled marijuana, Brown and the juvenile said they smoked marijuana and drank beer together, said Lt. Les Lovell with the El Dorado Sheriff's Office. The juvenile was also found to illegally have a pack of cigarettes on her.

The school was immediately contacted, Lovell said.

“We're both good partners in trying to minimize any potential threats to our student population,” Lovell said. “When you have an open campus, or you have events occurring during after-school hours, it's often very difficult to control every event. I think the school district does a great job with the kids, and I would call this a unique incident.”

Brown's phone was disconnected, and he could not be reached for comment.

Prosecutors have not charged Brown, and are reviewing the case, according to Hans Uthe with the district attorney's office. A decision could be made as soon as next week, Uthe said.

Jim Watson, director of human resources for the district, said he could not comment specifically on this situation, due to the fact it is a personnel matter. He also said he could not comment on whether or not the employment status of Brown had changed since his arrest Nov. 6.

This was the second employee at the school to be arrested in the past six months.

Irma Salazar, 26, was arrested in May for misleading statements regarding an aggravated assault outside a church, while she worked as a security guard for the district. During the incident, a group of men allegedly beat up and robbed a 22-year-old Kings Beach man outside the church.

The information Salazar allegedly provided to police caused them “trouble” during the investigation, reported prosecutors at the time.
