INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — A group of 11 individuals from Tahoe and Carson Valley traveled to the Dominican Republic at the end of October. They traveled not for a Caribbean vacation with sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters, but to provide dental care and God's love to children in the mountain city of Jarabacoa.
The team, from The Village Church in Incline Village and First Presbyterian Church in Carson City, provided dental education and care to more than 200 children to students from Anija School and The Ark Children's Home, as well as sharing songs, games, drama, crafts and stories with the children. Both of these facilities are ministries of Kidsalive International. This ministry was founded in the early 1900s and has facilities for children all over the world.
The dental team was composed of Dr. Dave Andrews; dental hygienists Jan Talbot, Sara Holmes and Kellie Butterworth; dental assistant Kathy Fisher; and Renee Taylor and the Rev. Dick Randall providing clinic support. This team provided dental education, cleaned teeth, gave fluoride treatments, applied dental sealant and restored and extracted teeth.
Their “make-shift portable dental clinic” was in the basement of the church adjoining the Anija School. The team was challenged with the amount of dental care needed by these children, frequent power outages and a few equipment breakdowns. Regardless of the conditions, the team was creative in providing the best possible dental care to the children.
The rest of the team — Gail Titus, Bedford Holmes, Jenny Scanland and Todd Butterworth — shared games, drama, crafts and songs with the children, as well as helping them with English as the students helped the team with Spanish.
The team greatly appreciates the support of the community with this dental mission trip. The financial as well as dental equipment and supply donations made this trip possible. The team is hoping to return to Jarabacoa again in October of 2010. This would allow for continued dental care for the children as well as longer term relationships with the children, school staff and Kidsalive missionaries in the Dominican Republic.
