American Indian tribes make sticks for dancing, talking, games and walking. The sticks are decorated with natural items like feathers, leather and even animal skulls.

In preparation for Thanksgiving, or just to use when out hiking make your own walking stick. Small sticks would also be nice Thanksgiving decorations on your holiday table.

What you need:

• A stick: Look in the yard for a stick that is long enough to use in your project. It does not matter if it is completely straight or how thick it is. If you are planning to use as a walking stick it does need to be the right height.

• Yarn, string, cord, ribbon, leather strips.

• Embellishments of fur scraps, bells, beads, feathers, or natural items from the woods.

• Glue.

• Scissors.

How to make:

Decorate the top end of the stick with a piece of fur or yarn by wrapping it around the end of the stick and glue in place and tie with string or cord. Wrap several colors of yarn tightly around stick down about half way. Again use glue to secure to the stick as well as tie in place.

Tie a string or cord near the bottom of the yarn wrap and use this to add embellishments of beads, bells, feathers, etc. Feathers will need to be glued to the stick.
