Historic vote pairs all Lake Tahoe-area high schools in same athletic league

LAKE TAHOE — A historic prep league encompassing all five of Lake Tahoe's high schools became official on Wednesday.

As anticipated, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's Board of Control adopted realignment changes for its Northern 4A, 3A and 2A schools during a meeting at the Silver Legacy in Reno.

Beginning next school year, Incline, North Tahoe and Truckee high schools will compete in the same league in all sports in the six-school Mount Rose League that also includes South Tahoe, Whittell and Sparks.

Under the new arrangement, South Tahoe, Truckee and Sparks will compete for 3A regional and state titles, while Incline, North Tahoe and Whittell will still vie for 2A championships.

South Tahoe, Fallon and Elko were the only three current 4A schools that were reclassified to 3A-2A.

The NIAA, however, was unable to approve realignment proposals for the 1A North, 1A-2A South and 3A-4A South.

Tournament formats have yet to be discussed. League, regional and state qualifying formats and brackets will be considered at a June meeting in Reno.
