Led by top finishes from Mike Sunseri and their girls relays, the Highlanders earned 20 individual medals at the 2A State Track and Field Championships at Damonte Ranch High School this past weekend.
“I was very pleased,” said first-year Incline coach Megan Lade. “Unfortunately we had a couple of injuries this year and lost a couple of other athletes, but overall, for a first-time coach, all the girls and guys came together and did really well, so I'm very pleased.”
Incline's girls placed third as a team to Whittell and Pershing County, while the boys were fourth behind ROP, Whittell and White Pine. Lade said the Incline girls would have finished runner-up instead of third had there not been for a mix-up in the 4x200 relay — in which an official indicated the wrong handoff zone, resulting in a disqualification instead of a win in the event.
Sunseri backed up his strong performance at zones with a first-place finish in the 3,200-meter run (2-mile), a runner-up finish in the 1,600 (1-mile) and third-place finish in the 800. He won the 3,200 with a time of 10:06.43, while posing a 4:44.52 in the 1,600 and a 2:07.63 in the 800.
Sunseri also was part of the 4x800 relay team, along with Tommy Mancuso, Levi Dodge and Eric Baron, that finished runner-up to ROP with a time of 8:49.66.
The Incline girls posted impressive results in the running events, as their 4x100 relay team took the win with a time of 51.93 and its 4x800 team finished first in 11:04.76. That 4x100 squad was made up of Elena Thurman, Mariah Joseph, Emily Hanna and Tori O'Connor, and the 4x800 squad of Madison Kwasny, Amy Lindsey, Chloe Dodge and Katie Cochran.
The girls 4x400 relay team of Hanna, Sayurit Medina, Cochran and O'Connor also fared well, as it placed second in 4:17.73.
Thurman finished runner-up in 100-meter dash as well as the 200, posting times of 13.17 and 27.54. O'Connor took second in both the 400 and 300-meter hurdles, recording times of 62.57 in the 400 and 48.48 in the 300 hurdles, while Cochran took second in the 800 with a time of 2:25.54.
Dodge finished runner-up in both the 3,200 and 1,600 to Silver Stage's Mariah Gramolini, who won four events — the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Dodge posted a 5:51.21 in the 1,600 and a 12:30.94 in the 3,200, just 2 seconds behind Gramolini.
On the boys' side of the competition, Kevin Cornell placed runner-up in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 10 feet, while Eric Baron finished third in the 3,200 with a time of 10:45.14 and fourth in the 1,600 in 5:00.25. Spencer Wilson was fourth in the 3,200 in 11:09.88.
The top four finishers in each event earned a medal. Incline's boys relay teams earned three medals, as its 4x200 squad (Jacob Lewis, Ryan Lee, Ryan Calhoun, Danny Chavez) took second in 1:36.87, as well as its 4x800 squad, while its 4x400 team (Lewis, Lyonel Pfaender, Mancuso, Calhoun) took fourth in 3:49.14.
“Everything we wanted to have happen happened — except for the girls 4x200 team getting disqualified,” Lade said. “Well, and it's May and it was snowing and freezing.”
