Athletes of the Diamond Peak Ski Team started the race season in great form this past weekend. From the Far West J3s racing at Mammoth to the Far West J4/J5s racing at Sugar Bowl to some of the younger racers attending the Tahoe League Race Series at Squaw, DPST saw many top finishes.
DPST first-year J3 Far West racer Lauren Keller skied to a 10th-place finish on Sunday at an overcast, cold, and very windy race, the Clifford Mann Classic Giant Slalom held at Mammoth. Even more impressive, the winner was a collegiate racer who is 10 years older than 13-year-old Keller. The day before, Keller also held her own with a 12th-place finish.
The DPST J4/J5 Far West racers opened their season with a slalom race under mostly sunny skies off of the Christmas Tree chair at Sugar Bowl Resort. Amanda Pretti, 12, led the J4 ladies, stepping up to the podium both days with third-place finishes while teammates Alyssa Kennedy, 12, and Erica Kennedy, 12, took fifth and eighth places, respectively, on Saturday and Erica placed again on Sunday, coming in 14th. For the J4 men, Daniel Dolimpio, 11, skied to a fifth-place finish on Saturday. Winston Pretti, 11, broke his hand while racing on Saturday, but still pulled out a 14th place.
For the J5 women, Belle Johnson, 10, kicked off the season with a bang by taking home the gold both days while Michael Hartman, 10, took home the bronze both days for the J5 men. Emily White, 10, also had a great race on Sunday for the J5 ladies, taking home 12th place.
“It was a great weekend. DPST made a strong statement again and we are looking forward to our next race at Squaw,” said J4/J5 Head Coach Josee Lacasse. “All the racers had brilliant moments during the weekend, whether they placed or not.”
The Tahoe League skiers got off to a great start with their first race of the season with a slalom held on the Exhibition run at Squaw Valley. For many of these athletes, it was their first time racing. In the 7/8-year-old girls' division, DPST had four 8-year-olds finish in the top 10: Julia Holm fifth, Mia Rathsack seventh, Rachel Delaney ninth and Rebecca Waterson 10th. The 7/8-year-old boys saw Aidan Pretti, 7, race to seventh place, while 10-year-old Noah Cleary took to the podium with a third-place finish in the 9/10-year-old division.
On Sunday, Tahoe League racing continued at Squaw Valley with the 11 and older age group. DPST racer Alaina Chen, 12, took third place in the 11/12 girls' age group while teammate Jeremy Goldberg, 11, raced to third place for the 11/12 boys. In the 13/14 girls' division, Anna Hartman, 14, took seventh place. Tahoe League Head Coach Petra Plajabes showed nothing but excitement and enthusiasm with the results from all Tahoe League athletes.
Far West racers are awarded through 15th place, while Tahoe League athletes receive awards through 10th place. See the full results and times for all DPST skiers in the accompanying box scores.
