James “Scotty” Lebel of the Sugar Bowl Academy and Breezy Johnson of the Rowmark Academy punched their tickets to Skofja Loka, Slovenia, with top finishes at the Topolino Shootout at Sugar Bowl this past weekend, Jan. 21-23.
The Topolino Shootout is an invitational event that brings together the best J3s in the West to compete in slalom and giant slalom for a chance to go to Europe. A total of 19 men and 21 ladies from California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Alaska, and Utah took part in the competition, which included three runs of slalom on Saturday and three runs of GS on Sunday.
Lebel battled with Squaw Valley's Erik Arvidsson, in second, as they pushed each other along.
Other Far West men included Squaw's Cody Wilson with a win in the second slalom run and fourth overall. Garrett Driller placed fifth, Squaw's Addison Dvoracek 11th, first-year J3 Jordan Cashman 14th, Kye Moffat 15th and Diamond Peak's Zane Bensing in 16th.
On the ladies' side, Johnson recorded two first-place slalom runs and two first-place GS runs to lead the field.
Squaw's Audrey O'Brien finished fourth to lead the Far West ladies. Teammate Julia Cashell was just behind in fifth, followed by Diamond Peak's Hannah Johnson in sixth, Squaw first-year J3 Nina O'Brien in seventh, and Diana Abbott, Marie Johnson and Tenaya Standteiner taking the ninth through 11th positions. Johanna Gur was 13th and Sierra Ryder 14th.
Lebel and Johnson will head to Slivenia in the spring.
