The season-long quest for J3 skiers (ages 13-14) to qualify to attend the Far West Junior Olympics made its second stop this past weekend, Feb. 4-6, at Northstar.
Weather was sunny and cold and the conditions race-ready, hard-pack snow for the three days of giant slalom racing.
The Diamond Peak Ski Team's Hannah Johnson had three spectacular days of racing. Taking to the podium on Friday with a third-place finish, she followed it up with fourth- and ninth-place finishes over the weekend.
Combined with her fourth place at the Snow Summit Slalom series, Johnson is well on her way to gaining a JO berth.
First-year J3 Lauren Keller also had a great showing with ninth- and 11th-place finishes. Adding her ninth-place slalom finish into mix, Keller also is one to watch out for.
For the men, Gavin Chen came through with 13th- and ninth-place finishes. Chen adds those to his third-place slalom result.
Benjamin Farrar turned in a solid 14th-place finish on Friday, and Zane Bensing skied into an impressive eighth place on Sunday. Both racers also turned in top performances at the slalom series and are in the hunt for JO spots.
“It should not go unnoticed that all of our DPST athletes represented with success,” said Head J3 Coach Eric Garayoa. “All scored big and/or had personal-best finishes. We had one athlete on the podium, another five finishes in the top 10, another three in the top 15 and four more in the top 30.”
There is one more race series this season for a total of nine races to qualify. Each athlete's five best finishes are used for scoring and invitations to the JOs. This year, the top 31 men and top 22 ladies qualify. Super G is next up, Feb. 25-27 at Squaw Valley.
