Diamond Peak Ski Team Tahoe League athletes competed in a dual slalom race at Sugar Bowl this past weekend, Feb. 12-13.
Unlike most ski races where the athletes race against the clock, the dual slalom format has them going head to head. Saturday's races brought the 10-and-under crowd to Van Ruiten's run, or the “race arena,” to compete on stubby (short) slalom gates.
The skies were sunny and the course firm, but by the time the second runs started, the winds were gusting. Diamond Peak Ski Team (DPST) 7- and 8-year-olds were rewarded when first-year racer Satchel Hirsch skied into fourth place and Aidan Pretti fifth for the boys. It was Aidan's third top-10 finish this season.
On the girls' side, Julia Holm took eighth and Rachel Delaney 10th. For both girls, it was also their third top-10 finish this season.
Moving up the age bracket to the 9- and 10-year-olds, Timothy Novak came in fifth place for the boys for his second top-10 finish this season. Ava Laurie, in her first race of the season, took home ninth place.
The 11-and-older athletes took to the course on Sunday and also competed in dual slalom format facing the tall gates. DPST's 11- and 12-year-old girls saw Alaina Chen in fifth place and Sophia Holm take 10th place in her first race of the season.
Next up for the Tahoe League athletes is another split race giant slalom at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Saturday, Feb. 26. All DPST finishers are listed in the box scores. For more information about DPST programs, athletes and coaches, go to www. dpsef.org.
