Diamond Peak Ski Team J4/5 athletes traveled to Mt. Shasta on Feb. 12-13 for a beautiful weekend of racing. The slalom and giant slalom races were held under blue skies with no wind and temperatures in the 40s.
On the first day, Diamond Peak J5 skier Belle Johnson led the field with a commanding win in the J5 (ages 9-10) ladies' slalom. Johnson had a 6.58-second lead over the second-place finisher. Emily White also took home an award for 15th place.
DPST raced away with four top-15 finishers in the ladies' J4 (11-12) giant slalom race. Leading off the DPST contingent was Amanda Pretti with a fifth-place finish, closely followed by Erica Kennedy in sixth, Alyssa Kennedy in 12th and Hannah Laurie in 13th.
The men's J4 giant slalom race saw Winston Pretti in seventh place, and Nelson Bedient in 11th.
On Day 2, Johnson once again climbed upon the podium with a second-place finish in the ladies' J5 giant slalom. So far this season she has an unbelievable streak with three wins and two runner-up finishes in five starts. Emily White also continued her award streak with a 15th place. White's season has taken her to four award ceremonies in five starts.
For the men's J5s, Michael Hartman raced into 13th place.
Amanda Pretti once again led the DPST team, and the J5 ladies, with a tie for first place in the slalom. Pretti is also having an incredible season, with five top-five finishes. Teammate Alyssa Kennedy also had a great race with a sixth-place finish to add to her growing medal chest.
J4 men also competed in slalom and DPST's Winston Pretti and Casey Delaney skied into eighth and 13th place, respectively.
Incline Village residents may come out and cheer on their hometown skiers when the J4/5 race circuit rolls into Diamond Peak Ski Resort on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26-27. Watch hopeful future Olympians finish from the Diamond Peak Lodge deck as racers speed down Show Off. Far West racers are awarded through 15th place.
