TAHOE CITY, Calif. — The 2011 edition of SnowFest!, North Lake Tahoe's annual winter carnival, kicked off this weekend with a bevy events, including the fifth annual Extreme Food eating contest at Mamasake in the Village at Squaw Valley.
The food contest saw contestants devouring coconut snails, fermented soybeans, raw sliced beef tongue and fish ma soup.
Contestants impressed the crowd with their gut-wrenching gusto as owner Elsa Corrigan sashayed trays of off-the-hook food items.
Many dishes are considered delicacies in other countries, described by one contestant here as reminiscent of a "locker room" or "bag of farts."
The food contest was one of many events over the weekend — highlighted by the Tahoe City parade. For photo galleries of the events, see them as they're posted today and this week at the Bonanza's sister paper, the Sierra Sun, at www.sierrasun.com/photos.
