Jumping right in with the Tahoe League results, Diamond Peak Ski Team showed its depth at the Big G race held at Northstar on March 12.
Racing was held under partly sunny skies with great conditions on the Pioneer run.
In the 7/8 girls' race, DPST speedsters Rachel Delaney and Rebecca Waterson raced into sixth and seventh place. For the boys' 7/8, DPST's Ethan Chen and Satchel Hirsch took two of the top 10 finishes with sixth and eighth places, respectively. In the boys' 9/10 age bracket, DPST saw another set of sixth- and seventh-place finishes by Timothy Novak and Noah Cleary. Although the conditions were great, this was a tough race that saw 20 disqualifications.
In the same race but under vastly different and difficult conditions, the 11-and-under racers skied on Sunday, March 13.
DPST's Jade Erickson persevered in the cold, windy and low-visibility conditions to take fifth place in the girls' 11/12 age bracket.
“Big G is a challenging event and we had some great skiing and some great results by all of our athletes,” said Tahoe League Head Coach Petra Plajbes.
Next up for the Tahoe League team is a make-up GS race at Sierra-at-Tahoe.
Moving about three and a half hours to the south, the Far West J4/5 athletes headed to Mammoth Mountain for the Minaret Challenge.
The J4s ran a super G course on the Cornice to Fascination runs, while the J5s tackled a giant slalom course on Terry's to Cornice Bowl runs. Just like the weather at in Tahoe, the Saturday, March 2 race conditions were sunny with some wind, but Sunday, the weather was brutal with overcast skies, high winds and flat light. By the time racing continued in the afternoon, the upper mountain had been closed.
Basking in Saturday's sunshine, DPST J4 ladies Amanda Pretti, Aly Kennedy and Erica Kennedy raced into fifth, eighth and 10th places. On the men's side, Nelson Bedient brought home 11th place. The DSPT J5s had Michael Hartman in seventh place for the men and Emily White in ninth place for the ladies to collect medals at the awards ceremony.
Despite the harsh weather on Sunday, DPST had great results. J4 Amanda Pretti took to the podium with a third-place finish, followed closely by the Kennedy sisters with Erica in 11th and Aly in 12th. Nelson Bedient also came through with a 15th-place finish. Belle Johnson once again led the DPST J5 ladies, landing on the podium with a third-place finish. Emily White also saw another awards ceremony with a 12th-place finish. Matthew Smallhouse went to his first awards ceremony this season for the J5 men with a 11th-place finish. Next up for the J4/5s is another trip to Mammoth for their championships March 31-April 3.
Heading back to Lake Tahoe, DPST J3s headed to Heavenly for a Friday night race under the lights on March 11. DPST's Hannah Johnson took a podium spot with a second-place finish in this open slalom race. On the men's side, Ian Reeves raced into 15th place. Next for the J3s are the Western Region Junior Championships being held close to home this year at Squaw Valley, March 17-20
Far West racers are awarded through 15th place and Tahoe League through 10th place.
