When the weather finally cleared enough for the first day of the two-day Tahoe League Championship this past Sunday, Diamond Peak skiers showed their stuff in the dual slalom race held on their home turf.
The 10-and-under athletes raced down Showoff and the 11-and-older athletes took to FIS. More than 350 athletes turned out for a great day of racing. In order to compete in the championships, racers had to compete in two other Tahoe League races during the season.
Nowhere more than the boys 7-8-year-old category did DPST show it meant business. On the podium was Aidan Pretti with a tie for second place, his best of many top finishes this year. Sixth and seventh places went to frequent top finishers Ethan Chen and Satchel Hirsh. And, making his first awards ceremony appearance this season, Otto Albrecht finished in ninth place.
For the 7-8 girls, Julia Holm recorded another top finish, standing on the podium in third place. Rachel Delaney, another frequent visitor to the awards ceremonies this year, raced to fourth.
In the 9-10 category, DPST's frequently awarded Noah Cleary took a second-place podium finish for the boys. Not only did Timothy Novak place eighth, but he also opened the awards ceremony playing the Star Spangled Banner on the violin.
For the 9-10 girls, Zoe Klenke led with a sixth-place finish and was followed by Ava Laurie in ninth.
Bode Glavish and Jeremy Goldberg claimed fifth and sixth places in the boys 11-12 division. Jade Erickson landed on the podium with second place for the 11-12 girls. Frequent award ceremony attendees Alaina Chen and Sophia Holm raced into sixth and seventh places.
Other DPST Tahoe League racers that gave it their all on Sunday include Cyrus Brubaker, Jackson Weinberger, Sean Busse, Clara Weiss, Ainsley Hickenbottom, Tara Hartman, Breena Soli, Mia Rathsack, Rebecca Waterson, Alani Powell, Cole Powell, Marcus Honey, Tommy Ornberg, Zoe Kirstine, Kenzie Davidson, Sophia Reed, Kaci Meyer, Carl “Wolfie” Moller, Daniel Luksch, and Rachel Meyer.
The team hopes to see a quick recovery by Jack Morrison, who broke his clavicle in a collision with another skier during morning race warm-ups.
“We are so very proud of all of our racers for working so hard leading up to the Championships, training in storms, blizzards and almost impossible conditions,” said DPST Tahoe League Head Coach Petra Plajbes. “It paid off and we have some awesome results.”
Overall awards were presented on Sunday to the top 15 racers in each category based on their performance during the regular season. The athletes are ranked based on points they obtained through finishes in races that lead up to the championships.
In the Tahoe League, racers are presented awards through 10th place, except for the overall awards, which are awarded through 15th place.
