With the loss of the Truckee River Outfitters Fly Shop, which closed its doors in the fall of 2007, the area has been without a full-service fly shop for the past several years. That, it seems, is about to change.
Enter a familiar name in the fly-fishing industry, Andy Burk. Andy has worked in a number of shops, including The Fly Shop in Redding and the recently closed Reno Fly Shop, which was the parent shop of Truckee River Outfitters.
Andy is a renowned fly-tier, writer, artist and fly fisherman. He felt that Truckee needed a full-service fly shop. As a result, he has opened a small shop in the Sports Exchange Building at 10095 West River Street in Truckee.
The new shop is the West River Fly Shop. The new logo for the shop is already on some great T-shirts. It is an original design by Andy Burk. It features a mayfly with its wings out, spent spinner style.
While it is a small shop, it will fulfill the needs of most fly-fishers. Those wishing to buy some original flies tied by Andy himself will find a good supply of them as well. Other local flies and a selection from Umpqua will round out the fly selection. Judging from the flies I saw while there, they are terrific patterns for our area. Expect to pay more for the flies, but the quality is certainly worth it.
There is no fly-tying material in the shop yet, but they intend to carry some in the future. Both Andy and Dan LeCount, another notable local fly-tier, will offer fly-tying classes at the shop.
Guide service for the Truckee River will also be available through the shop. As far as fly-fishing equipment is concerned, they will carry Galvan Reels and Beulah Rods. Galvan, made in Sonora, Calif., makes one of the most serviceable reels in the marketplace for an extremely reasonable price. Beulah Rods, made in Oregon, is a relatively new rod company, but their rods have already gained favor, particularly among steelhead fishermen in the Northwest.
The shop opened over the Memorial Day weekend and is open seven days a week from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Get down to the shop and check it out. Also check out their blog at westriverflyshop.wordpress.com. They are also on Facebook.
