Jordan Wright, a to-be senior at Incline High School, won a three-way tiebreaker to finish runner-up at the Nevada State Jr. Amateur (golf) Championship on June 27-28.
The championship tournament was held at Eagle Valley East Golf Course in Carson City and included the top 15- to 17-year-old golfers in Nevada.
Nicholas Greco of Reno shot a 3-under-par 69 both days to take the win with a 138.
Wright, who won the Nevada 2A state title for his Highlanders as a junior this past spring, shot a 70 on Day 1 and a 73 on Day 2 to finish knotted in a three-way tie, at 143, with Soungjae Baek of Las Vegas and Cole Erquiaga of Winnemucca.
In the sudden-death playoff hole, Baek started off with a tee shot that landed in the middle of the fairway about 100 yards away. Wright, meanwhile, blasted a driver shot that came to rest on the green, about 12 feet from the hole. He missed the ensuing putt, however, and had to settle for a birdie. Baek also birdied as Erquiaga missed his birdie putt and dropped out.
Down to just two golfers for the next playoff hole, Wright hit tee shot on a par-5 that stopped about 150 yards away. He then knocked it to within about 30 feet, where he just missed eagle before tapping in for a birdie. Baek hit a little long off the tee. He chipped up and did not make his putt, giving Wright the tiebreaker for second place.
The previous weekend, on June 25-26, Wright finished in a four-way tie for seventh place in a field of 40 men's golfers in the Northern Nevada Amateur tournament at Washoe Golf Course.
University of Nevada, Reno Golf Coach Jacob Wilner won the tournament with a 143. Ryan Mitchell was second, with a 134, and Joe Sanders was third, shooting a 146. Wright shot a 148 along with JT Cockerill, Dick Wenzel and Brett Okimura. Foster Kenton of Mineral County High School finished one stroke behind, with a 149.
