LAKE TAHOE — Pop Warner is the oldest and largest youth football program in the country. It is the only youth football program that stresses academic achievement as part of its program through including scholastic requirements as part of eligibility to play.
Pop Warner has 8 divisions (age levels) of play providing a football opportunity for kids ages 5-15. Teams are part of associations which are organized into local leagues.
The local team, the North Tahoe Rams, is part of the Sagebrush Empire league which includes South Lake Tahoe, Reno/Sparks, Carson and surrounding areas.
For the past several years, Rams teams have been small and Incline Village-based. This year, while only one team will be fielded (Junior Pee Wees, ages 8-11), half are kids coming from Kings Beach and Tahoe City — truly making the Rams a “North Tahoe” team.
“We had a great recruiting season and were able to close the team at the start of practice on August 1 with 28 kids,” said team president Scott Wilderman. “For the last three years I've been involved, we've still been recruiting in September and haven't had as many as 20 kids. So the program really is growing.”
Incline resident Greg Brimm joined the organization this year as head coach, bringing a lifetime of football experience as a player for the University of Nevada, Reno, former Pop Warner coach and former referee at the Pop Warner, high school and collegiate levels.
The North Tahoe Rams Junior Pee Wees kick off the season at Jamboree this Saturday, Aug. 27, at Carson High School. This league-wide event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features scrimmages among 55 teams at seven age levels.
Rams homes games this year take place Saturday — Sept. 10 and 17 and Oct. 8 — at Incline High School.
“With a new head coach and new association management, we'll all be learning together and are looking forward to a great season of fun for the kids,” Wilderman said. “We thank the North Shore communities, our local sponsors and fans for their support and hope to see big crowds at our home games.
