The host Diamond Peak Ski Team enjoyed two great days of Far West giant slalom racing at its home resort this past weekend, with sunny, warm weather and better snow coverage thanks to recent storms.
The Showoff race area was firm and fast, ideal for racing. More than 325 athletes competed, each taking two runs through the course each day. The Diamond Peak Ski Team athletes were ready and took advantage of the home turf, producing outstanding results.
Julia Holm, 9, was Diamond Peak's standout of the weekend, as she raced to first place in all four of her J5 girls runs.
The J4/5 team brought home three first-place podium finishes, six podium finishes total and seven additional top 15 places.
Winston Pretti raced to a first-place finish in Saturday's J4 boys race and a third-place podium finish on Sunday. Casey Delaney placed fifth for J4 boys on Sunday. Belle Johnson, a consistent top performer for the Diamond Peak J4 girls, placed second on both days. Laurel Taylor raced to 11th on Sunday and Emily Donahue placed 15th on Saturday and 14th on Sunday.
For the J5 boys, Aidan Pretti placed 13th. For the J5 girls, Rachell Delaney placed 14th on Saturday and 12th on Sunday.
“What a weekend!” exclaimed Diamond Peak Ski Team coach Josee Lacasse. “The Diamond Peak coaches and staff did a fantastic job preparing the venue and we had some great skiing and improvements were made by all.”
The team's next J4/5 race is in two weeks at Squaw Valley, with a dual slalom and a dual giant slalom.
Over at Alpine Meadows, another giant slalom race was held with the Tahoe League over the weekend. Diamond Peak athletes raced to two top-15 finishes, with Otto Albrecht placing seventh in the 7/8 boys' division and Alani Powell placing fifth for the 7/8 Girls.
