Both county commissioners and the school board president were the first to file for candidacy for the upcoming November election.

County Commissioners Norm Frey and Lynn Pearce, and Churchill County School Board Trustee Greg Koenig filed their declarations of candidacy with the county clerk Monday morning, along with Jana Joyner, who filed for school board trustee.

Linda Rothery, Churchill County deputy clerk, said the first day of filing is usually busy, but with only four local races strictly in Churchill County, traffic was slow. She said she anticipates stragglers during the next 10 days. The filing remains open until May 16 with the last day to withdraw a candidacy being May 28.

Local seats up for election this year include both Frey's and Pearce's county commission seats, and three school board seats currently held by Dave Ash, Paul Hinz and Koenig. Ash told the LVN he doesn't plan to run for re-election. Two mosquito abatement district seats, held now by John McMullin and Harold Newman, are also on the ballot.

All three Third Judicial District Court judge positions will be on the November ballot, but candidate filings for those seats took place in January. Those filing for district judge include Churchill County District Attorney Art Mallory, incumbent judge David Huff, Reno attorney Jack Kennedy, incumbent judge Leon Aberasturi, Yerington attorney John Schleglemilch, Dayton Justice Court Judge William Rogers and Churchill County Deputy District Attorney Thomas Stockard.

On the state level, Congressman Dean Heller filed his intent for candidacy Monday. State assembly districts 35, 36 and 38, which each represent a whole or part of Churchill County, are all up for election this year. The incumbent assemblymen of each district are Pete Goicoechea, Ed Goedhart and Tom Grady, respectively. None of the incumbent assemblymen had declared his candidacy as of close of business Monday, according to the Nevada Secretary of State's Web site.

State Sen. Mike McGinness' seat for the central Nevada Senatorial District, one of the largest in the country, is also up for election this year. According to the secretary of state's site, he had not filed for office Monday.

The LVN will publish the names of candidates and the offices sought as the filings are recorded with the county clerk's office each day. The filing period closes May 16.

The 2008 primary election will be held Aug. 12 with early voting taking place July 26 through Aug. 8. The general election takes place Nov. 4, with early voting Oct. 18 through Oct. 31.
